These are my personal beliefs and values regarding AI use, which do not necessarily reflect those of my employer. I acknowledge that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into research, communication, and personal workflows. As a researcher, I recognize both the potential benefits and the ethical responsibilities that come with using AI tools. I believe AI can be responsibly and ethically used for tasks that enhance efficiency, creativity, and accessibility, while maintaining human oversight and intellectual integrity.

Daily administrative tasks (e.g., emails, meeting notes)
Brainstorming ideas
Language translation (with native speaker oversight)
Drafting materials intended for lay or non-expert audiences
Writing tasks (e.g., creating outlines, editing grammar, refining structure/flow, summarizing my own work)
Literature reviews and searches (e.g., topic modeling, trend analyses, citation network mapping, summarization)
Finding data sources (with human verification)
Citation management
Qualitative or quantitative data analysis (with appropriate human expert oversight)
Compliance checks (e.g., reviewing grant proposals against rubrics/notices to ensure completeness and alignment)

Generating manuscripts or abstracts from scratch
Finding data sources without verifying for authenticity
Image or video generation (Note: I have graphic design experience and prefer to create visual materials myself. Image and video generation also raises ethical issues related to artistic ownership and consumes significantly more energy than text-based prompts.)
Any task without appropriate disclosure of AI use
I commit to maintaining full personal responsibility for any work that involves AI assistance. I will not present AI-generated material without appropriate review, correction, and contextual understanding. As a researcher, I am accountable for validating all AI-assisted content before it is shared, published, or used to inform decisions. AI may support my workflow, but it does not replace my expertise, judgment, or responsibility for the final product.
I acknowledge that AI use has an environmental impact due to the energy demands of computational processes. This impact disproportionately affects communities that are already vulnerable to climate change and environmental health disparities. To mitigate harm, I use AI only when it provides meaningful or necessary advantages, and I prioritize low-energy applications such as text generation over image or video creation. While I acknowledge my personal individual contributions to AI's environmental impact, I believe that corporations who profit from AI models are ultimately responsible for its collective influence.
Ultimately, I view AI as a tool rather than a substitute for human creativity or critical thought. When used thoughtfully and intentionally, it can reduce administrative burden, accelerate timelines, and enhance the reach of community-engaged research. However, I believe AI use requires continuous reflection, ethical awareness, and a commitment to rigor, transparency, and accountability.
